Spokane man's unique plan to stop package thieves met with skepticism from SPD

SPOKANE, Wash. -

One man is rallying the city to stop thieves from stealing packages and he's calling it, "Catch-a-Thief-a-Thon."

Hector Martinet isn't taking any chances this Memorial Day weekend. "I hate thieves. I just hate them. If you are leaving Friday, you can't leave Friday because if you get a package delivered on Friday, it will not be there on Tuesday, it will be a fact!"

So he's got a solid plan. "If we all put a package out full of poop let's say, or your discarded junk from the house or any households, put a brick in there. Maybe if they grab enough poop and junk, maybe they will stop doing it," said Martinet.

Hector caught a thief himself at his neighbors porch back in winter.

So as you can imagine, he's not afraid.  "Don't be a victim, I'm not!"

He says to grab a big or small box, anything you can find. "Why not be proactive instead of reactive?"

Spokane police suggest you don't take part and hope he doesn't either. They said it sounds legal but for safety sakes, people should not take matters into their own hands. They suggest you have packages delivered to your work or a trusted neighbor but if they are stolen, report it to crime check. It helps police track problem areas so they can allocate resources.
