Coeur d'Alene community 'carries the load' for fallen heroes

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of community members, including police officers, met at Higgens Point in Coeur d’Alene to start off their Memorial Day weekend by “carrying the load.” It’s a way to honor fallen military and law enforcement officers.

They marched with backpacks for about five miles.

“They've paid the ultimate sacrifice. They've laid down their life for us to do what we want to do, to enjoy the things that we enjoy without batting an eye and I think it's a truly amazing thing to do that for someone else,” says Chris Thompson with Post Falls Police.

It's a walk that hits close to home for many. “K27” printed on their sleeves to remember Sgt. Greg Moore who was killed in the line of duty.

“For us to be able to honor him to remember him in this way is just a very small token of our appreciation for his sacrifice that he gave and for his family as well,” says Brad Johnson with Post Falls Police.

Although the load on their backs may weigh heavy, it's a weight these folks are more than willing to take on. They hope people can remember what Memorial Day is about.

“It's about remembering those who have fallen, who have given the ultimate sacrifice and for one day carry their load, carry their burden,” Thompson says.

If you missed it this year and want to participate, they are doing it again next year.

It's getting more crowded around Jupiter. A team of astronomers is reporting the discovery of a dozen new moons circling the giant gas planet.    That brings the number of moons at Jupiter to 79, the most of any planet. Saturn is next with 61.    The astronomers were looking for objects on the fringes of the solar system when they spotted the Jupiter moons. They found a dozen small moons. The confirmation of 10 was announced Tuesday; two were confirmed earlier.
