Riverfront Park fountain broken with temps on the rise

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

Everything else in Riverfront Park right now says "summer."  The Fountain Café is open, the Sno cone stands are serving up the ice, but one major thing is missing.  The Rotary fountain sits dry and that's been bothering more than just the kids.

"We came down to get some food and thought we might see the fountain," says Mathew Allison, dad of almost two year old twins Seraphina and Josephina.

"The fountain draws more people to the park," Mike Olson tells KHQ.  For the animal artist, the more people the better to show off his creations.

He makes all different kinds of animals out of paper that he twists into twine and paints.  "It fascinates so many different kinds of people," says Olson.

Everyday Olson sits in Riverfront park crafting and displaying his designs.  He says the fountain is an integral part of the park.   "Oh I love it," says Olson.  "I love the sound of the water splashing when it hits the concrete, and to look up and watch the glare of the water.  It's real pretty."  But this year there's none of that.

"It ran for a little while this year and then, no more," Olson says.

The director of Riverfront Park, Jonathan Moog, says something is likely wrong with the fountain's electrical system.  He says it's not so unusual for a decade old fountain.

In the meantime, however, many people aren't happy.

"The fountain is broken and we are sad," says six year old Bella Garringer.  She says she would've enjoyed playing in it.  Instead she and seven year old sister Taylor, had to settle for Sno cones.

The parks people say they are trying to get the fountain fixed before Hoopfest in late June, but their original goal was Memorial day and they weren't able to make that happen.

The good news is that splash pads throughout the city will be open. For more info: https://my.spokanecity.org/recreation/aquatics/splash-pads/
