Moses Lake woman wants answers after dog dies following trip to groomers

MOSES LAKE, Wash. -

After a trip to the groomers, one Moses Lake woman is asking why her dog died.

Desiree McCullough lost her dog Casper

“Casper was a kind of dog everybody should get to have,” she says.

McCullough has raised them both since they were 5 weeks old. Now, they’re five.

“These guys are my kids,” she says.

On May 28, McCullough took them to the groomers at Petco in Moses Lake for the first time and then got a call telling her Casper was non-responsive and they were taking him to the vet.

McCullough says she was told Casper died from asphyxiation because of stress. A necropsy report shows Casper's body was in fair condition and had "normal skeletal muscle mass." It says he died from suffocation, also saying bulldogs are at a high risk for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), which could lead to asphyxiation. The report also states the dog is moderately obese, saying obesity also raises the risk for that syndrome.

Petco says its internal investigation found nothing that happened was caused by being in their care. They say a loss of any animal is taken very seriously and they're very saddened by this. Petco says as of now, they don't plan on changing their policies.

McCullough still has a lot of questions.

“It makes me lay awake at night thinking about it,” she says.

She hopes to see some sort of change.

“It's just sad. Everyday it's sad. And I'm either sad or mad because this didn't have to happen,” she says.

McCullough is planning on hiring an attorney. Petco says they do train all of their groomers.
