Bretagne, the last known 9/11 search and rescue dog dies

Posted: Updated:
HOUSTON -

Last year, we told you about Bretagne (pronounced "Brittany"), the last known surviving search and rescue dog from Ground Zero on 9/11. Bretagne and 300 other dogs helped in the recovery effort in the days and weeks following the tragedy. A young pup then, Bretagne would go on to help so many more in Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Most recently, Bretagne would spend her time visiting elementary school students.

When barkpost.com heard about Bretagne's upcoming Sweet 16, they flew her to New York City and gave her a proper thank you, along with an unforgettable birthday party.

Sadly, Bretagne's health had been declining recently and the decision was made to put her down this week, but not without a proper send-off. On Tuesday, her handlers took Bretagne to the vet with a line of firemen waiting for her. As she was led into the vet's office, she was given a hero's salute by everyone in attendance. When she was finally put down, she was placed in a casket, which was then draped with an American flag and given one final salute.

Bretagne's body will undergo an autopsy at Texas A&M University as part of a long-running study on 9/11 search dogs. She will then be buried in the Houston area.

Thank you, Bretagne. Good girl. Rest in Peace.
