Spokane bar taking extra safety precautions after Orlando shooting

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

In the wake of the attack in Orlando, one local Spokane bar is taking extra steps in safety. They met on Monday, a day they're normally closed and brought in police.

Spokesperson Lucinda Kay for the nYne Bar & Bistro says the owner Kitty and her wife Terrie have everything set in stone in case of a crisis. Their two emergency exits are in plain sight and clear to see in the small business.

"We have an amazing security team that are former military that are all well trained," said Kay.

They've brought in reinforcements, the police, just to make sure what they're doing is enough. "In the six years that we've been open, we've never had a problem. It's also an opportunity to up our game a little bit," said Kay.

Sergeant Shawn Kendall with the Spokane Police Department stresses to have situational awareness. "Let's get our heads out of our phones, heads out of these intimate positions and start scanning the environment, look for danger," said Kendall.

The nYne Bar & Bistro says they are going to have police come in again and do a walk through with them sooner rather than later, to take the proper safety precautions.

"We keep opening our doors because we don't make decisions based in fear. We make decisions based on information and based in love," said Kay.
