Spokane man dies in Kootenai County plane crash

KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho -

Sheriff's deputies report a Spokane man died Saturday after a plane crash in the back country of Kootenai County.

Deputies responded to the reported crash around 3 p.m. in a thickly forested area near Horsehaven. A passerby was driving through the area and saw the wreckage off the road. Horsehaven is about 40 miles east of Coeur d'Alene.

A backcountry deputy and Kootenai County Volunteer Search and Rescue teams were on scene within minutes of the report. The downed plane was about 25 yards up a steep embankment off of Forest Service Road 794. The deputy on the scene confirmed the pilot was dead in the plane. The pilot was the only person in the plane.

Additional officers, medical personnel and firefighters were called and investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration were called to advise on the crash. A Kootenai County detective is also assisting with the investigation.

Information on the plane and the identity of the pilot have not been released.

Investigators say 26-year-old John L. Scott of Lancaster, Pennsylvania,  was headed westbound on SR 290 east of Flora in a 2012 Toyota Tacoma pickup when he crossed the center line into the oncoming lanes of traffic.

    An Idaho man is in the hospital after being shot while elk hunting near Harrison, Idaho. On October 15, Kootenai County Sheriff’s deputies received a call from a 31-year-old man who said he’d accidentally shot his hunting partner, 20-year-old Nicholas Christensen of Potlach, Idaho. The caller said Christensen had shot a bull elk and the pair separated to look for it. The older man shot at another elk, but instead hit his partner.
