Escaped DOC inmate arrested in Deer Park

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. -

The Spokane County Sheriff's Office has confirmed they arrested Juan A. Cruz-Grijalva in Deer Park Monday morning. 

Deputy Mark Gregory said an alert citizen in the area of 900 S. Colville Road reported seeing a suspicious man they believed was Cruz-Grijalva. Deputies responded and found Cruz-Grijalva who took off on foot. Deputy Jeff Rogers caught up with him as he was trying to enter the home of Anna and Stan Marshall, who were out of their porch having coffee. 

The Marshall's told KHQ's Cynthia Johnson that Cruz-Grijalva ran up to them and asked if they could hide him. With Deputy Rogers in pursuit, Cruz-Grijalva quickly surrendered when ordered to, and was taken into custody. 

Cruz-Grijalva, who faces news charges of Escape 1st Degree, was transferred to the Airway Heights Corrections Recovery Team who was in the area attempting to capture Cruz-Grijalva.

The Sheriff's Office would like to thank this citizen for being vigilant and reporting this escapee.

Early this morning, just after 2:30 a.m., Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were notified an inmate of the Olympic Corrections Center, based out of Forks, WA, had escaped. 

The inmate, 24-year-old Juan A. Cruz-Grijalva, was assigned as a kitchen worker for a fire training academy at the Deer Park High School.  The inmate was last seen behind the high school at approximately 2:00 a.m.  A search by K9 Units and Air 1 has, so far, been unsuccessful.

Cruz-Grijalva was last seen wearing Khaki Jeans, white t-shirt or a long sleeved gray thermal type shirt and possible a stocking cap.

He is described a 5’ 04”, approximately 140 pounds.  He has a tattoo on his left cheek of 3 dots, on his right cheek, a tear drop and he also has a 3” scar on his forehead.  He was serving time for Robbery 1st Degree.

It is unknown where Juan A. Cruz-Grijalva may be heading or in which direction.  Anyone who sees Juan A. Cruz-Grijalva is asked to call Crime Check at 509-456-2233.

Blue-green algal blooms have the potential to produce dangerous toxins in areas of the lake.

The Pantagraph reports 78-year-old Johnny Icard was sitting alone Wednesday at a defense table in Bloomington where he had represented himself at trial. When the judge said he was revoking Icard's bond, the Bloomington man said he had family affairs to attend to and wasn't expecting the verdict.

    PORT ORCHARD, Wash. (AP) - A Washington state man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for shooting a man while he was sleeping.    The Kitsap Sun reports 22-year-old Robert Hackett was sentenced last week after pleading guilty to attempted first-degree murder. The Kitsap County Sheriff's Office says Hackett, a woman and the victim were inside a house in Manchester in January after spending the day together. Hackett later shot the victim in the arm while he slept.
