Spokane cathedral vandalism caught on camera

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

A Spokane man is in hot water Monday after police say he went on a vandalism spree inside a local church in downtown Spokane.

Police were called to Our Lady of Lourdes Saturday morning after they received a call of a man inside the church with a knife. Police say they already had a big presence in the area over the weekend because of Hoopfest, so they were able to respond to the call in just minutes. They quickly found and arrested James Meier, who is now facing a number of different felony charges.

You can see Meier acting strangely on surveillance cameras vandalizing the cathedral right after mass Saturday morning. He's seen damaging a priceless, 100-year-old marble carving of the last supper. He then attaches a 10-inch knife to the end of a cross before swinging it like a sword.

Father Connell with the church says its a church of the people and it's important to keep doors open to everyone. They are looking into adding extra security, especially between services when there aren't a lot of people around.

Meanwhile, Meier is now facing burglary and malicious mischief charges.
