Car prowlers stake out hiking trails in the region

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -

Be on the lookout for car prowlers in our parks and outdoor areas because these car prowlers are watching you and waiting to see where you hide your valuables. When you walk away, that's when they strike.

This is what happened in broad daylight to a Spokane Valley woman who visited the Centennial Trail off of Barker Road.

Teresa says she comes to walk at the Centennial Trail on a daily basis. "I come out just to unwind at the end of the day," said Teresa. But on Saturday, she left from her car just for an hour and when she came back, she found a completely shattered window on her car. "I about fell. I about dropped to the ground. The nerve and the desperation they felt to do this is beyond me," said Teresa.

Witnesses saw it happen and told her. "Saw my car, my window being bashed in and the truck taking off," said Teresa. It wasn't just Teresa that was hit. She says at least three others were hit too.

But that's not the worst part. "They had to be watching because they went right to my purse. That's all they took and were gone," said Teresa.

They took her cash, cards, and driver's license, where she left her purse in the back of her car. Now it's all got to be replaced. "They had a plan. They watched us all go, and they hit us all like bam, bam, bam," said Teresa.

She wants the crooks caught and for everyone to pay attention to their surroundings. "When you get out of your car, just take a quick scan around the parking lot. See if there is anybody that looks suspicious," said Teresa.

KHQ  checked with the Parks Department. They say they do have crews that go out and monitor trails over the weekend.

KHQ got a bit of description too: a black truck with Idaho license plates.

If you know anything, you're asked to call Crime Check (509) 456-2233.
