EMMETT, Idaho -

Authorities say a Boise area police chief was injured and a police dog was killed in a vehicle crash.

Idaho State Police said in a news release that officers responded to the collision in Emmett Thursday afternoon.

Police say Emmett Police Chief Gary Scheihing and his police dog Roscoe were in a 2004 Ford Crown Victoria at a stoplight when a semitrailer struck the car from behind.

Police say Scheihing was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the semitrailer, 51-year-old Kenneth Myers of Kuna, was taken to a Boise hospital.

An Emmett veterinary clinic posted on Facebook Thursday evening that Roscoe was euthanized due to injuries sustained in the crash.

The crash is under investigation by Idaho State Police. Police say both men were wearing seat belts.
