MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. -

Imagine not knowing your best friends’ name, forgetting who your family members are, or taking a class and not remembering any of the material the next day.

That's exactly what it's like for people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of memory loss.

But certain therapy, like fishing, can help those with the disease cast away confusion and fear.

“All of a sudden they just relax, they smile, and they laugh,” said Resident Program Director at Brookdale Park Place, Heather Newbill. “Maybe all of a sudden are like ‘oh I remember when I did this, when I was this age, or my mom or dad did this with me, or maybe I remember coming here a long time ago’,”

That was the case Thursday morning at Medical Lake, as dozens of residents from Brookdale fished for memories.

“I got a 6-foot sturgeon in the Snake River,” said Grady Garmon. “I thought I’d never get it in but when I got it in the boat he had fins that were as sharp as razors.”

“I had a boat and a pontoon,” said Omar Stuenkel. “And fishing from that is really pleasant.”

The residents at Brookdale take fishing trips a few times a year. Other types of memory therapy include listening to music and interacting with animals.
