People on high alert after string of car break-ins in Liberty Lake

Posted: Updated:
LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. -

People in one Liberty Lake neighborhood are on high alert after a string of car break-ins.

Neighbors say there were 10 different incidents along their street in the span of a week.

Alex Vanamburg is one of those who had his car broken into. He noticed his driver’s side door wasn’t closed completely when he went out to his car in the morning.

“They went through all the compartments. It looks like they tried to jimmy the ignition switch,” he says.

Alex has been a victim before when he was living in Los Angeles. He says he expected it there, but here, it was surprising.

“I've lived here for three years now and we've never had an issue of this nature before,” Alex says.

So now, he's making sure everything's secure and not leaving anything in sight in his car.

“It's really easy to get lulled into thinking you're safer here so you just need to take reasonable precautions,” Alex says. “Stop inviting disaster.”

Liberty Lake Police say they have identified five suspects in these various car prowlings, and charges are pending against them.

SEATTLE - Scientists at the University of Washington say two planets approximately 40 light years away from ours could be just like Earth.  UW is part of an international scientific collaboration studying the TRAPPIST 1 solar system. The TRAPPIST 1 system orbits around a star 12 times less massive than the Sun and only slightly larger than Jupiter. It contains at least seven planets in orbit and is the closest known solar system to our own.
