ST. JOSEPH, Mich. -

The Latest on a shooting at a western Michigan courthouse (all times local):

10:10 p.m.

The ex-wife of a western Michigan inmate authorities say shot and killed two bailiffs in an attempt to escape tells a television station she spoke with him Sunday and had no indication he was planning an attack.

Jessica Gordon tells WOOD-TV that her ex-husband, Larry Darnell Gordon, was "an amazing man that got mixed up with the wrong people."

Authorities say Gordon was being taken from a holding cell to a court hearing when he grabbed a deputy's gun during a scuffle. He shot and killed two bailiffs, and wounded the deputy and a civilian woman.

Other officers then shot and killed Gordon.

Jessica Gordon says he was probably afraid of going to prison and wanted to "get home to our baby girl."

Two bailiffs killed in a shooting at a southwestern Michigan courthouse were longtime law enforcement officers who became court officers after retiring from their departments.

Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey identified the bailiffs late Monday as 61-year-old Joseph Zangaro and 63-year-old Ronald Kienzle. He said they were "close friends" of his.

Zangaro was head of court security. He retired from the Michigan State Police as commander of the Bridgman Post in Berrien County.

Kienzle retired as a sergeant of the Benton Township police department after serving in the U.S. Army.

Wounded in the shootings was Deputy James Atterberry. He remains in stable condition at Lakeland Hospital.

He did not identify a civilian woman wounded in the shooting.

A Michigan sheriff says all indications are that the inmate who fatally shot two bailiffs at a courthouse was trying to break out of custody.

Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey gave new details about the shooting at a press conference Monday evening.

Bailey says the 44-year-old suspect, Larry Darnell Gordon, was at the courthouse for a hearing on multiple felony charges.

The sheriff says authorities had "no warning signs" that the suspect would be violent.

Bailey says a deputy who was injured in the shooting is "doing fine" in intensive care after surgery. A woman was also injured. Her name and condition weren't immediately provided.

During the incident, Bailey says Gordon took hostages for a short period of time before trying to leave through another door. He was killed by other officers.

This item has been corrected to reflect that the suspect is 44 instead of 45.___

Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey is giving more details to reporters Monday night, hours after two bailiffs were killed by an inmate who wrested a gun from an officer.

The other victims are a sheriff's deputy and a civilian, although their injuries aren't life-threatening. The sheriff says the inmate was killed by other officers. No names have been released.

Bailey says, "Our hearts are torn apart." Gov. Rick Snyder calls it a "terrible day in a wonderful community."

The courthouse is in St. Joseph, which is 100 miles northeast of Chicago.

I'm more of a dog person, but if there is a place that is willing to pay me to live on an island in Greece and take care of cats, I'll become a feline fanatic.  Well, there is someone offering such a job right now and they claim it's a real opening.  God's Little People Cat Rescue posted on Facebook that they are looking for someone who can look after 55 cats on a little Greek island paradise called Syros.
