SPOKANE, Wash. -

A few local people are preparing to fly across the country ahead of the Republican and Democratic National Conventions.

When 2,500 republican delegates and 50,000 people head to Cleveland next week, they'll officially choose a GOP nominee for president.

Kelly Lotze will be one of those delegates. He says he a little stressed about it, but very excited.

"It's a once in a lifetime opportunity," he explained. "One of 85 people representing the state of Washington."

His interest in politics started at a young age, developing a passion when he visited Washington, D.C. in high school.

"In '09 my sister ran for city council here in Spokane," he said. "I got involved in her campaign, and I've pretty much been involved with the local republican party ever since."

Lotze was actually a fan of Scott Walker at the start of the primaries, and when Walker dropped out, he got behind Marco Rubio.

But because of the way the rules work, he'll be voting for Donald Trump at the convention. But even though Trump wasn't his first choice, Lotze is listening to what the people want.

"At this point I don't feel like disenfranchising the voters of Washington state," he said. "And as much as I get the vote your conscience movement, I think we do ourselves a disservice to the republican party to try and change the rules once they've been put in place. "

While Lotze has packed his suitcase and bought his plane ticket,  expectations are harder to prepare.

"Whatever we've seen in previous years, this year is going to be totally different," he said.

The Republican National Convention begins on Monday, and we'll be checking in with Lotze to see what happens.

Be sure to stay tuned as KHQ also introduces you to a local Democratic Delegate before they head to their convention in Philadelphia.
