SPOKANE, Wash. -

Avista Corp. is installing dozens of electric-vehicle charging stations in Eastern Washington homes and offices as part of a pilot project.

The Spokane-based utility says the two-year program will help it collect information to help it manage the ups and downs of customers' electricity use.

The Spokesman-Review reports that Avista this month will begin installing EV charging stations in 120 homes and 80 at businesses and public locations.

It will also install seven DC fast chargers in public areas, including Rosalia, Spokane and Pullman. Those units will extend an existing network of public charging stations in the state, which are mostly around Puget Sound and the Interstate 5 corridor, and could help reduce "range anxiety" in drivers worried about where to charge their cars on longer trips.

Avista provides electricity to nearly 340,000 customers.
