SPD Police Chief finalists talk to KHQ following reportPosted: Updated:
There are two finalists left in the search for a new Spokane police chief – Chief Robert Lehner from the Elk Grove, California Police Department and Chief Dominic Rizzi from the Yakima Police Department.
KHQ reached out to both on Wednesday in light of the investigator's report into the resignation of former Chief Frank Straub. Both Lehner and Rizzi haven’t read the report yet, so they didn’t want to comment about it, but they did have this to say.
Lehner wrote to us in an email:
"From my own research of the position vacancy, I was aware an investigation was underway and learned yesterday that the report would be issued today. Obviously, I will be interested in reading it in its entirety but, as far as I know, the events under investigation precede the police chief search process I’m involved in. I do know that, one way or another, the City of Spokane needs a capable, professional police chief and that decision is still pending."
Over the phone, Rizzi told KHQ he likes Spokane and if he’s chosen to be chief, he can make a difference.
“My goal and number one concern would be the ethical approach that we would take moving forward and the professionalism and leadership of the department and repairing the community trust,” he says.
There’s still no set date for when a decision will be made.
