SPOKANE, Wash. -

A one man is dead after shooting himself in front of Spokane Valley Deputies, despite efforts from the Sheriff's Office to negotiate with him Tuesday night.

The shooting happened at Appleway and Farr near Winco Foods.

According to Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich, a man was pulled over for a traffic stop earlier in the night. Knezovich says the man had a gun and a concealed weapons permit. Knezovich said during the course of the traffic stop, the man's car was towed and he was released and given back his gun.

A short time later, deputies heard reports of gunshots in the area. They responded and eventually found the man from the traffic stop holding the gun to his head.

Deputies negotiated with the man, and in an effort to deescalate the situation, shot bean bag rounds at him. Knezovich said after the man was hit with the bean bags, he shot himself in the head with his gun. He died at the scene.

The incident is under investigation. The man has not yet been identified.
