SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -

A vicious attack outside a Spokane Valley church has Spokane County Sheriff deputies searching for answers as to who did it.

A 58-year-old central American man was severely beaten behind the New Life church in Spokane Valley this week. When deputies found him, they found him half-dressed and unconscious.

"I think it's horrible," said Bruce Horn, a church member from New Life.

Horn has been a member of New Life since 2002. He says nothing like this has ever happened since he's been coming.

He doesn't know the man too well who was brutally beaten but he does know he came to New Life to socialize and walked around church property. "I just met him the one time. Nice guy from what I remember," said Horn.

Deputies say what happened was horrific. The attack was so brutal that the man taken to the hospital was listed in serious but stable condition with severe facial fractures.

"We will keep our eyes open and our ears open. Hopefully it doesn't happen again. I just hope they catch the person or people that did this. Shame on them," said Horn.

Deputies say the attackers may have been homeless. Some people nearby found clothes after the attack and deputies think some of them may belong to the attackers.
