SPOKANE, Wash. -

A Spokane mother of four was left helpless after she says a stranger took her and her four children hostage.

The man claims the pair met online. She thinks he'd been stalking the family for weeks.

Tuesday night was the victim's birthday.

She had friends over, and everyone just assumed the suspect had arrived with someone else.

She says suddenly he was the last one there, and he was telling her if she tried to get help, he'd murder her.

"I've never been that scared in my entire life," said the victim, who doesn't want to be named.

The celebratory mood was quickly shattered. In it's place, terror.

"I just knew I needed to get my kids out first and get them to safety," she said.

The victim said the man, identified as Jeremy Schreibeis, told her they had met on a dating app.

She says that's not true.

She initially thought he was tagging along with one of her party guests, but as the crowd thinned out to just him, she realized she was in grave danger.

The victim says Schreibeis began threatening to kill her, and saying he wanted to rape her.

She says he also made horrifying comments about her young daughter. Schreibeis, however, says he doesn't recall any of this.

"We were talking," Schreibeis said from behind bars. "I went to bed. I woke up and the cops had their guns drawn on me."

The victim was able to sneak a 911 call and hang up.

Police had to kick this door in to get to Schreibeis.

Now, all the victim wants is to keep her alleged attacker off the streets.

"I'd like him to go to jail for the rest of his life," she said.

The victim said her children were able to escape during the ordeal. They safely made in the a neighbor's home. Police arrived just as they were preparing to call them.

SPOKANE, Wash. - It's been nearly one week since Washington voters passed Initiative 1639, a sweeping package of stricter gun regulations - particularly for semiautomatic rifles. While the measure raises the minimum age to purchase semiautomatic rifles to 21, creates enhanced background checks, and forces customers to wait 10 days before taking possession of the firearm, I-1639 lays the framework for "safe storage" of semiautomatic rifles
