SPOKANE, Wash. -

Just days away from the start of another school year, Spokane Public Schools is listening to parents concerns.

Parents voiced their opinions during a school board meeting Wednesday night, saying there are too many suspensions and expulsions.

“The school system must make changes to help our kids,” said a mom whose child has been suspended and expelled dozens of times. “Not just for me and my child, but because there are a lot of kids in the same boat.”

It’s no secret that SPS has sent more kids home than any other district in the state, but they’re trying to fix the problem by starting with relationships.

“We do discipline, said Sheridan Elementary School Principal, Larry Quisano. “It's not the principal or the assistant principal or one or two teachers, it's we do discipline.”

What Quisano means is that the cross guards, bus drivers, teachers, and other school staff will start to build relationships with students, and tell them when they are doing something right.

Quisano also says the school is continuing to use an approach called Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, or PBIS, a philosophy that aimed at the root of student behavior.

Quisano says there is room for improvement, but believes the district is on the right track to reducing the number of suspensions and expulsions.

SPOKANE, Wash. - Crime is becoming a growing concern in parts of downtown Spokane-- and police are getting all to familiar with it. The worse it gets, the fewer people want to spend time there-- which only creates a vicious cycle. Tonight while while we were in the downtown neighborhood, we saw firsthand what businesses and police are worried about and say they see every day. "I think most areas are overall safe," Officer John O'Brien
