Spokane woodworker overcoming all odds to live his dream

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

Ernie Everitt is a natural salesman and he now spends some of his free time selling furniture. But this furniture isn’t something someone else made. He put it all together himself.

He got this idea for this after the windstorm in November destroyed his home’s fence. He decided he was going to make it into tables and chairs.

“It means I can prove I'm more than disabled,” Ernie says.

Ernie was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and doctors said he wouldn't live past 16 years old.

“All my life I've been told 'you can't you can't, you're disabled, you're not able.' But I know what I want in life,” he says.

For each can't, he’s proved he can. He’s 43 years old, bought a house, and put in a workshop. Now, he’s also an entrepreneur.

“Have you heard of the song ‘How Do You Like Me Now?’” he says with a smile.

He’s going to keep going and hopes one day to actually employ veterans.

“In my eyes I'm just a normal guy who wants to better his life,” he says.

He hopes others will see him the same way.

“Don’t look at a disability. Look at the person. Everybody's disabled even you, my neighbors,” Ernie says. “If you really think about it, you will see my point.”

Ernie will have a booth at Spokane Disability Pride event on Saturday. He does take custom orders for the furniture. You can contact him at eeveritt73@hotmail.com
