CHATTAROY, Wash. -

Firefighters in North Spokane County have surrounded a fire burning in Chattaroy, specifically near Hardesty and Owens roads. The fire burned about 27 acres. Thankfully, no homes or buildings burned and there have been no injuries. Everyone who had to leave their homes can now return. Right now, there is no word as to what caused the fire. Firefighters say they will be in the area mopping things up for the next few days.

One homeowner says he was worried at first about the fire but says he had a lifetime experience that taught him a lesson he will never forget.

"We have a lot of defensible space here so we felt like we had a chance to save our house," said Greg Taylor, who lives in Chattaroy near the fire. Taylor has been living in Chattaroy since the 80's.

The fire Thursday night brought back memories he'll never forget. "To me it was like, 'OK. We're in this situation, what are we going to do?'" said Taylor.

Taylor didn't want to have another repeat of 1991 with firestorm where more than 100 homes burnt to the ground. The Taylor's lost everything. "We basically had a car and the clothes on our backs and one photo album. I stayed here with the hero syndrome thinking I was going to save our space and that was a joke," said Taylor. Their home used to be surrounded by trees.

A lesson learned that he can show today with his defensible space. "The idea here was to have a green space right in front of the house so if the fire actually did approach our house, that this will not burn," said Taylor. The Taylor family has a rock barrier around their home too. They water their lawn every day and make sure to keep the lawn cut short.

Fire crews told KHQ that the Taylor family has a picture perfect defensible space around their home and that it doesn't get much better than that. Having defensible space could really be the difference between saving your property or losing it.
