Family of man killed in Coeur d'Alene boat crash speaks out

Posted: Updated:
COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -

It's been exactly three weeks since a boat crash on north Lake Coeur d'Alene killed three people. The bodies of 21-year-olds Caitlin Breeze and Justin Honken as well as 34-year-old Justin Luhr were recovered by the dive team just feet from the crash site.

The five people on the boat that hit the victims' all had minor injuries. So far, no one has been arrested in connection to the crash.

The dad and sister of Justin Luhr said the past 21 days have been agonizing. His dad, Mike Luhr said they just want justice.

Mike wrote his son a text the other night. He said he knew his son would never receive it, but he wanted to put his agony into words.

The text reads in part, "Justin, I know you will not get this message, but i want to say how proud of you I am. My heart is broken you that you are not here with us. In the last two weeks, it's become apparent what a father and husband you have been and that is the best thing a man could ever be. Not only that, you have touched many lives in a good way and that too adds to the riches you have stored. I'm not sure what the good Lord had in mind, but in my humble opinion, he took a very good man before his time. I will miss you until the day I see you again, son. I am so missing you right now. Rest in peace my friend."

Mike says his son was happily married. He was a doting dad to his two little girls. Mike and the rest of the family made so many memories with them. They were robbed of the opportunity to make any more.

"To find three young people in 160 feet of water within feet of each other…I don't think they had a chance," he said.

The family said Justin was a responsible boat owner who wouldn't even talk on the phone while behind the wheel. They believe he briefly stopped to text his wife that he'd be home soon when the crash occurred.

"It's like ripping your heart out," Mike said.

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the crash. They've executed search warrants, done multiple follow up interviews, but no one has been charged in connection to the crash.

"There's nothing you can do to bring them back, all you can do is hope and pray that whoever is responsible faces the consequences," Mike said.

Saturday would have been Justin Luhr's 35th birthday.
