Moses Lake police rescue teens after crash into irrigation canal

MOSES LAKE, Wash. -

Two teenagers from Moses Lake were injured in a one vehicle crash just before 2 a.m. Sunday.

Clayton Clark, 18, was driving a 1995 Honda Civic on Road 5-Northeast near Road L-Northeast when he failed to negotiate a curve and went off the road. The car hit a railing at the head of an irrigation canal and rolled on to its roof into the canal.

Four Moses Lake police officer responded to the call and jumped into the canal to rescue the car's passenger, identified as 19-year-old Jesus Cornejo. Cornejo had minor injuries from the crash and was taken to an area hospital.

The officers then pulled Clark from the car. Clark was critically injured in the crash. He was taken to an area hospital before being airlifted to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane. One of the officers received minor injuries during the rescue.

It's unknown if the two teenagers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Alcohol is believed to be a factor. The Grant County Sheriff's Office traffic unit continues to investigate.
