Man ignores evacuation orders to defend home from Cayuse Mountain Fire

Posted: Updated:
STEVENS COUNTY, Wash. -

The Cayuse Mountain Fire is burning in Stevens County on the north side of the Spokane River and at last report was over 12,000 acres in size and 30 percent contained.

A large chunk of the resources fighting the fire have been focused in the area of Elijah and Flett, where some of the worst damage is. But one lifelong resident says he didn't want to rely on anyone else to protect his stuff.

"I was scared that morning. I said I'm scared," remembers Jim Wynne.

The 82-year-old man didn't let that fear keep him from the danger zone Sunday.

"Despite the road blocks I went around."

And once home, Jim immediately got to work saving his castle.

"We got to our house and we fought it. We saved my house and my granddaughter's trailer house by fighting myself," Wynne said.

His backup generator kept the water flowing. Wynne says the flames came within feet of destroying it all.

Jim says he hasn't seen chaos like this in 70 years. He says there was a similar fire in the 1940s when a fire jumped the river.

Jim's son lives a few feet away. Unfortunately they lost the battle with the flames and that home was burned.
