Parents want harsher punishment for man charged with 17-month-old's murder

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -

Parents of the 17-month-old boy who’s been in the ICU are dealing with the heartbreaking news of their son’s death.

“We’re trying to stay strong and handle things as best as possible,” says Antonio Wilburn, Maliki’s father.

Coeur d’Alene Police arrested Joseph Davis, the boy’s stepfather, for the crime. Police say Davis was left alone with Maliki for 20 minutes, and then the boy was found with a severe skull fracture. Davis made his first appearance in Kootenai County court Monday, where the judge set his bail for $1 million and the prosecutor says their office will be amending the charges of injury to a child to homicide in light of the news.

But Maliki’s parents want to see harsher punishment.

“It's not enough. It's not enough. He gets to sit there and breathe while he laid in a bed and died. It's not enough,” says Dacia Davis, Maliki’s mother.

For now, they’re focusing on their last moments with their son.

“Move him into a room where we can be with him 24/7. Sleep in there with him. We can talk to him and touch him. We're going to be able to hold our kid one more time,” Antonio says.

And they both have advice for other parents out there.

“Go home and stay home. Cherish every moment you've got with your kid,” they say.

Police say Davis told them he doesn’t know what happened, and prosecutors say Davis has a conflicting story.

Prosecutors also say Davis has a criminal past, and is currently on supervised probation which he has violated twice.
