Inland Northwest communities come together to thank firefighters

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. -

Communities all over the Inland Northwest are coming up with creative ways to say thank you to the men and women on the fire lines protecting our homes and neighborhoods.

If you drive on Valley Chapel Road, you'll notice Carol Gilligan's sign topped with an American flag. "We've got it up because without the firefighters, who knows what could have happened," said Gilligan. The sign reads, "Thank you firefighters, farmers. God Bless. Tom and Carol Gilligan."

It's not the only one you'll find. "It makes us feel really good to know that the community recognizes what we do in and out everyday even though this was a large event," said Greg Godfrey, Assistant Chief with Fire District 8.

Godfrey says the support is shown far and wide even close to them right in their own fire station. Kids have come in with their parents to drop off thank you signs.  "This one over here says, 'Thank you for working so hard, we really appreciate you, we are praying for you and your safety,'" said Godfrey.

The firefighters aren't just fighting the wildfires but responding to additional calls, more than 2,800 a year. "It's our way of saying thank you," said Gilligan.

I'm more of a dog person, but if there is a place that is willing to pay me to live on an island in Greece and take care of cats, I'll become a feline fanatic.  Well, there is someone offering such a job right now and they claim it's a real opening.  God's Little People Cat Rescue posted on Facebook that they are looking for someone who can look after 55 cats on a little Greek island paradise called Syros.
