Community holds candlelight vigil for 17-month-old

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

The community continues to mourn the death of 17-month-old Maliki Wilburn of Coeur d'Alene who police say lost his life at the hands of his stepfather. Hundreds gathered for an emotional candlelight vigil in Cowley Park just outside of Sacred Heart Monday night to remember Maliki.

On Friday, his mother discovered him at home unresponsive under a blanket. He was taken to Kootenai Medical Center and then flown to Sacred Heart where he was later pronounced brain dead and put on life support. Maliki's stepfather, Joseph Davis, was home alone with the baby and was arrested and charged with felony injury to a child. They say that will now be upgraded to homicide after the child's death.

Monday night was about baby Maliki and the effect he had on those around him during his short time. Community surrounded the family during the hardest time in their life, when they need it the most.

"Even though some people are monsters, most people in the community actually have a heart and care. It means everything. There's nothing more I could ask for right now than all this support," said Maliki's father Antonio Wilburn.

The family announced Monday night they would be keeping Maliki on life support so that they would be able to donate his organs and Maliki would be able to help someone else.

PULLMAN, Wash. - Six-year-old Denny Curran should be enjoying his last few days of summer before first grade. He should be teasing his brother, splashing in the pool, giving his parents a hard time about vegetables. Instead, Denny is dead, the victim of a horrific, freak bicycle accident that could happen to your child too. "Denny was an extraordinary child," his father Keith Curran told KHQ.

Police say at least one person has died and officers responded to almost 20 other calls of people acting erratically. Police are looking into whether there is a drug on the street that is "creating adverse health effects." Reported behavior is consistent with a stimulant, causing people to hallucinate and act in an unpredictable and sometimes violent manner.
