Spokane West Central Community Center school supply drive restocked

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

Tuesday was the first day of school for a lot of students in our area, but many are still in need of school supplies. KHQ found out the West Central Community Center is trying to fill that need - and the community stepped up to help.

Monday, the center wanted to be open from 9 am to 7 pm to give away supplies. However, they gave away $9,000 in supplies in three hours. They had to turn away about 300 families. Tuesday, the center received about $500 in supplies from local businesses and private donors. The drive is open to students all across Spokane, but the focus is on helping students at Holmes Elementary and North Central High School. The West Central Community Center says they're telling those teachers to keep an eye out for students in need.

"We've been asking them to please let those that have come without supplies to let them know this is happening," said Kat Hartsell, West Central Community Center outreach coordinator. "(It's for) those they know have fewer supplies than the rest of the classmates."

The West Central Community Center is hoping to give away school supplies again between 9 am and 5 pm Wednesday if they have enough supplies.
