Reports of 'Creepy Clowns' has residents on edge

Posted: Updated:
HAMPTON, Va. -

Clowns are in the news as of late.

Our Facebook message inbox was flooded with messages from people claiming to have spotted folks dressed up like clowns and scaring people at night. Viewers have sent in clown sighting photos in Deer Park and Cheney. Even one of our producers says she saw one Sunday night.

Recently, reported sightings of creepy clowns in the woods of South Carolina triggered the fears of those who suffer from Coulrophobia. Since then, it seems like we've been hearing reports of clowns terrifying people all over the country, mainly through social media. The Shoshone County Sheriff's Office posted a message on Facebook over the weekend saying they are aware of the reports are investigating the clown calls. The Grant County Sheriff's Office  tweeted a message to residents saying rumors of a lockdown at Moses Lake High School because of clowns were false, and so far there haven't been any clown-committed crimes.

On Monday, KHQ's Cynthia Johnson talked to one Coeur d'Alene man who says he was recently chased by a clown wielding knives.

Trending on Twitter Monday was the hashtag, #IfISeeAClown, which was mostly people either posting gifs of Forrest Gump running, or some sort of implication that they would cause physical harm to any clowns they might come across.

Heavy.com has compiled a listed of clown sightings across the country.

So far, most of these clown sightings appear to be pranks. Authorities say a 13-year-old girl in Virginia asked a person posing as a clown on social media to kill one of her teachers. Hampton police said in a news release Monday that the teenager asked the person to kill a teacher at a middle school. Investigators say they did not consider the threats credible, but they still patrolled the schools as a precaution. The girl has been arrested and charged with one count of threatening to kill by electronic message.

What do you think of all these clown sightings? Creepy fad or legitimate concern? Let us know on our Facebook page.
