Help Me Hayley: Teen's homecoming dreams come true thanks to Spokane community

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

A homeless teen just wanted one night worry free. Her dream was to feel beautiful and attend her high school's homecoming dance. Our community stepped up in a big way, giving her a night she will never forget.

It all started with a Facebook post. Joslyn LaClair's mother made a Facebook plea writing in part, "I just want her to escape from our crappy life for at least one night." Joslyn and her family fell on some hard times in recent months. She and her mother have been staying at the Union Gospel Mission for the past few weeks.

We featured the heartbreak last week, and viewers wanting to help rolled in by the dozen.

"Never in a million years would she have expected this," Joslyn's mother Candice said.

KHQ got busy right away, organizing a night fit for a princess. Hair stylists from Sassy's Salon gave the updo of her dreams. Professional make-up artist Veronica Mullins provided the stunning finishing touches, leaving Joslyn filled with happy tears.

"This kind of thing just doesn't happen," she said. "I feel amazing."

Impavid Photography provided professional images, and Olde Skool Limo had her arriving to the dance in style.

"I can't wait to have a night with my best friend," she said.

Many other viewers made a variety of donations. One man took care of dinner for the evening, another gave cash taking care of tickets to the big dance.

"I just want to say thank you," Joslyn said through tears. "Everyone who has helped me has been amazing."

SPOKANE, Wash. - The State Department of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) is a life-changing resource for hundreds of disabled people in Spokane. Finding them jobs, counseling and places to live. A big part of the agency's mission is at a standstill after DVR cut ties with one of it's major contractors without warning. For twenty-seven years, Compass has been a one-stop shop for launching disabled and disadvantaged residents on a path to a better, independent life.
