Spokane seniors offer perspective on election

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

It's an average day at the Southside Senior and Community Center, but the conversation is anything but average.

"I don't think Donald Trump thought he was going to win, so now I'd really love to see him get himself partially prepared to be president," said Carole Chalem, "because he's certainly not qualified."

Chalem has lived through several presidents and she knows what she likes in a leader.

"I wrote in George Clooney for president, because I thought he would be far better than either one of them," she said.

The first president 87-year-old veteran Bill Staeb voted for was Eisenhower, but he's never seen a candidate quite like Trump.

"None of them presidents talked like this guy did," he said. "I've heard stuff on there that I never thought I'd hear on television in a presidential election."

As a vet, Staeb says with talk of deportations we'll be lucky if we don't go to war.

"That ain't good talk for a country that's trying to unite itself and get together," said Staeb.

On the other hand, Annie Beyers says it was about time people stood up against a government they weren't happy with.

"I think it shocked everyone, that the American people could speak so loudly and so clearly, what they were looking for."

They were pretty fair mix of pro-Trump and anti-Trump, but they told me just like everyone else, they're very curious about what these next four years will bring.
