EWU police get K9 officer to help victims of trauma

Posted: Updated:
CHENEY, Wash. -

Eastern Washington University police just got their first ever K9 officer. She doesn't fight the bad guys or sniff out drugs but instead helps victims of trauma.

Two-year-old Hilani is a golden Labrador fit with a vest and EWU pride alongside Officer Tiffinni Archie. "She can seek out people that are highly stressed or they're upset about something without us having to really be around," said Officer Archie.

Hilani is specifically trained to be in the police force as an emotional support dog. So she can help victims of trauma, be at funerals, support officers, and even help victims of sexual assault. "It would make the officers job a little bit easier and the victims heart a little softer as far as helping them to cope," said Officer Archie.

EWU is the first university in Washington to have a dog like this to help students in situations involving sexual assaults. So far, Hilani has helped in three different sexual assault cases. "When we get the calls of sexual assaults, it can be anything, suicidals; if it's safe enough for us to come, Hilani and I will go in there and she will go to work and she knows who to seek out," said Officer Archie.

EWU campus police actually got this idea from another officer out in California. Hilani has been with EWU since August and is fully trained now.
