Alert neighbor helps catch package thief in Spokane Valley

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -

The holidays are approaching and that means plenty of packages will be delivered to homes in the area and left on the front porch. Unfortunately, that also means there will be plenty of thieves out on the prowl.

According to the Spokane County Sheriff's Office, thieves like 32-year-old Hillary Porter. Deputies say on Tuesday a neighbor in the area of Mission and Pines noticed Porter stealing a package from his neighbor's porch. The neighbor followed Porter while contacting deputies and just as Porter was about to get into a car, Deputy Hert from the Spokane Valley Police Department arrived.

The neighbor told Deputy Hert he saw Porter taking items out of a cardboard box and putting them into her purse. The neighbor says he then went and checked the box and saw that it was addressed to his neighbor. The man said he followed Porter, who had walked into a backyard. He confronted Porter, who told him she was trying to find a friend.

Deputy Hert found stolen items in Porter's purse and arrested her. The driver of the car said they did not know Porter was stealing items and they were let go. The items were returned to the victim.

Porter was arrested and booked for 3rd Degree Theft.

The Sheriff's Office wants to help you protect yourself during the holidays and has the following advice:

If you are expecting packages and won’t be home when they’re delivered:

  • Consider having them delivered to a neighbor you trust or a family member who will be home.
  • Insure packages to help protect your purchases.
  • Require a signature for delivery.
  • Utilize in-store pickup if available.
  • Don’t leave items in your vehicle unattended and if you must, secure them in your trunk or at least keep them out of sight.

Don’t provide a criminal who is looking for an easy opportunity to victimize you.
