Teen in underwear chases away would-be burglar

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

An 8th grader's family is calling him a hero for chasing off a man that was trying to break into their house.

Last Thursday, 13-year-old Kyle Lightfoot was at home in north Spokane getting ready for school when he noticed something. A man in his back yard trying to get in.

"He was opening the door and something caught my eye," says Kyle. "So I kicked it shut and chased him."

But before he ran out chasing the burglar, Kyle grabbed the first thing he saw: A meat cleaver.

"I chased him with it. Pretty stupid now that I think about it," Kyle says.

The burglar took off, jumping a 5-foot privacy fence just to get away from Kyle who was in his underwear holding that cleaver.

"I didn't think about it. Just chased him."

Kyle's mom, April Armstrong, is just happy everything turned out alright.

"What were you thinking? That was very brave but very stupid," Armstrong says.

A surveillance camera captured a picture of the man, but police are still searching for him.

Armstrong says she's talked to her kids about what to do in an emergency and in this case she's just happy her little daredevil is safe. Meanwhile Kyle says he was just trying to protect his family. And he would do it again.
