Madison Elementary students put hands up against hate

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

Madison Elementary School students are putting their hands up against hate and driving it out with love.

Students worked with their counselor Kendra Denny Maurer to get the entire school on this collaborative art project. After a week of lessons on unity and prejudices, each student designed their own hand they put them all on one canvas.

“They had the idea,” Denny Maurer says. “They were like we need to do something! And how can we support them.”

That's because two weeks ago, someone defaced the Martin Luther King Family Outreach center with hateful speech.

So these students got their pen and paper out to make a different statement.

“We can do anything we put our mind to as long as there's hope,” they say.

They’re taking a lesson from Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Helping our kids know that the only real response in the face of hate is to have that loving kindness,” Denny Maurer says. “I think that's what could really impact some wonderful change.”

This show of unity is just the beginning. They’re all raising their hands together for strength, love, and acceptance.

“Sometimes I feel like you need hope when there's darkness or something bad happens like this. And I feel like they just needed to be lightened up a bit and to know that everything is okay,” says one sixth grader.

It's a lesson in kindness that we can all learn.
