Spokane Valley man arrested after hiding from deputies in a tree

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -

Spokane Valley deputies report a 24-year-old man was arrested Tuesday night after he was spotted by a deputy running from a store and hiding in a nearby tree.

It started around 8:40 p.m. when Deputy Jason Hunt saw a man in dark clothing running from a Walmart near Broadway and Sullivan. The man, later identified as 24-year-old Kyle Roberson, was carrying a jacket and ran across the entire parking lot, making Deputy Hunt suspicious. The deputy drove toward Roberson and, when Roberson saw the deputy's car, he ducked behind a tractor trailer and hid in a row of thick trees.

Deputy Hunt called for backup and eventually found Roberson hiding in a large tree. Roberson followed commands and eventually detained.

Roberson told deputies he was running because a store employee was "pestering" him and the police had been called. Roberson said he didn't have identification and gave deputies a different name. Hunt checked on his information and caught Roberson in his lie. When confronted, Roberson admitted he lied because he had a warrant out for his arrest.

Deputy Hunt confirmed there was a felony warrant for Larceny-Theft of a Motor Vehicle. Roberson was placed under arrested, and Roberson told deputies he had needles in his pocket and he was a meth and heroin user.

Two clear plastic bags were also found in the jacket Roberson was carrying, and were found to contain meth and heroin. Roberson said he took the jacket from a friend's house, but wasn't able to tell the deputy where the friend's house was and who lived there.

Roberson was taken to Spokane County Jail and booked for two counts of possession of a controlled substance and his warrant.
