BOISE, Idaho -

The Idaho Department of Corrections is investigating the death of an Idaho Maximum Security Institution inmate who died Friday night of apparent natural causes.

According to the Department of Corrections, a correctional officer found 56-year-old Aurelio Moya Barajas on the floor of his sell.

Staff say he was responsive when they entered his cell, but stopped breathing shortly thereafter and had no detectable pulse.

Staff members initiated life-saving procedures but Ada County Paramedics declared Barajas dead at 3:22 am.

Detectives processed the cell as a crime scene.

The Ada County Coroner's Office is working to determine the cause of death.

Barajas was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 1st degree murder and 15-20 years for robbery in 1993.

Idaho Maximum Security Institution is a 516-bed maximum security prison for men.
