EWU band searches for volunteer musicians to play at coldest football game yet

Posted: Updated:
CHENEY, Wash. -

Eastern Washington State University is gearing up to play a frigid semifinal football game on Saturday in Cheney against Youngstown State University. It's going to be a long three hours for fans standing around in the cold but even band members trying to play their instruments.

Don Goodwin, the EWU Director of Bands told KHQ that they are going to keep musicians warm by having a tent behind the stands. They'll rotate band members in and out. They'll also have warm cider to sip on.

Goodwin says they'll try an experiment out where they will put hand warmers on the brass instruments to help prevent valves from freezing up. He says the cold weather can get a little tricky. "There's no way around it. Any time you put condensation into an instrument, and it's cold weather, you don't know what's going to happen. Some of the instruments behave just fine and they just keep playing as long as you keep that warm air going through the horn. Other instruments, you just don't know," said Goodwin.

Goodwin says they're going to roll with it and have fun.

He also says they are in serious need of volunteers to help play music during the football game. They've had up to 190 people play for the band in the past but he thinks this year the weather has been scaring people off.

They only have about 50 people signed up. You can sign-up by following this link: www.ewu.edu/alumni. http://www.ewu.edu/alumni
