Reporter at center of Cam Newton's sexist remarks apologizes for racist tweets from years ago

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -

The Charlotte Observer reporter at the center of comments by Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton that some found as sexist, has apologized for racist comments she tweeted out four years ago.

"I apologize for the offensive tweets from my Twitter account 4/5 years ago," Rodrigue said in a Twitter statement. "There is no excuse for these tweets and the sentiment behind them. I am deeply sorry and apologize."

In a May 2013 tweet, Rodrigue said, "The earth moves at 450+ mph that's 10 times triller than NASCAR Dale Earnhart's a (expletive) (racial slur)."

In other tweets from August 2013, Rodrigue said she was enjoying racist jokes from her father as they drove through Navajo country.

On Wednesday, Rodrigue asked Newton about his receiver's routes and Newton laughed at her and said it was "funny to hear a female talk about routes." The comment was criticized by many, including the Panthers, the NFL and media.

The comments cost Newton his sponsorship deal with Dannon.

Rodrigue would later respond on Twitter saying Newton's comments and attitude were out of line.

"I don't think it's 'funny' to be a female and talk about routes. I think it's my job," she wrote on Twitter.

She later said she tried to speak with Newton after and their conversation was "worse."

Cheney, Wash. Many including family and friends loved 64-year-old Ron Weston. He had a passion for making people laugh and lived a life full of adventure. Ron was also a Spokane firefighter and was the oldest recruit at the time. He was 45 years old and only retired five years ago after serving 14 years fighting fires. Many who knew Ron, knew he had a creative side. He loved building rat rods and sculpting anything out of metal. He sculpted this dragon which actually can breathe fire...
