Arborist cuts down dangerous tree near Spokane elementary school

SPOKANE, Wash. -

A Spokane arborist has cut down a 40-foot tree in Spokane that he says was dangerous. A day after telling us about his concerns with the tree, Joe Vogrig took matters into his own hands.

Branch by branch the dangerous decaying locust tree was finally taken down. Vogrig was initially concerned about the tree's health.

“I thought what a shame for it to sit here dead just waiting for the right storm," Vogrig said.

And it doesn't have to be a storm to knock it over. This tree could have fallen at any moment -- either on a car or parents with their kids walking to and from Cooper Elementary -- which is just down the street. Saturday Vogrig brought his tree truck and a couple of chainsaws to take down the hazardous tree for free.

"It wasn't so much that I was worried about the wood as much as I was worried about the roots that are decaying underground. That's the stuff you can't see," said Vogrig.

And boy was it rotted!

"Yes there's decay in the trunk, yes it was dead, yes it's been there for 15 years. It was getting worse and I mean you just don't know what was going on underground," Vogrig added.

You can't have a healthy tree without a healthy root system, and by not seeing the root system, you never know when you need to yell "timber!"

“A lot of folks tend to err on the side of caution, and this one being so close to a school I kind of felt the same way. Why wait? So here we are, tree's down, beautiful morning... What am I going to do? Stay home and watch cartoons? Let's come punch out a tree job, right?" Vogrig said,

He plans on repurposing the tree as firewood.
