Spokane Valley firefighters make house calls for fire safety

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -

Firefighters and volunteers from the Red Cross went door-to-door Saturday educating people about home fire safety as part of National Fire Safety Week.

"We are going door to door with over 40 volunteers knocking on doors offering free home fire safety checks, we'll check the smoke alarms. If they're older than ten years, we'll install free smoke alarms," said Spokane Valley Community Risk Reduction Specialist Elysia Spencer.

The alarms have been provided by the American Red Cross and Spokane Valley Fire Department through federal grant funding.

89-year-old Willard Ollila was kind enough to let us inside his home as fire fighters checked his one and only smoke alarm. It dated back to the early '90s.

"Like a lot of people, I guess we assume it works but I did check it every year and changed batteries in it regularly," Willard said.

Smoke detectors should be replaced every ten years, and batteries should be replaced or checked once a year. As temperatures are cooling by the day it's good time to check for dust on base board heaters, and make sure your fire place and furnace have been serviced.

All of these steps can be used to prevent a fire in your home. Willard had four new detectors installed and he was quite happy knowing his house is fully equipped.  "This is great! I know the Spokane Valley Fire Department always has been very good," he said.

In all, crews installed a total of 379 smoke alarms during their rounds Saturday.

I'm more of a dog person, but if there is a place that is willing to pay me to live on an island in Greece and take care of cats, I'll become a feline fanatic.  Well, there is someone offering such a job right now and they claim it's a real opening.  God's Little People Cat Rescue posted on Facebook that they are looking for someone who can look after 55 cats on a little Greek island paradise called Syros.
