Former EMT helps gunshot victim outside Spokane restaurant

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

A man remains in the hospital after he was shot in downtown Spokane late Saturday night.

Police responded and found this man outside of Monterey Café, where witnesses say he somehow made his way to. One man was leaving a business just a block away when he heard the gunshot. He noticed people start to scatter and then saw the police fly by. That’s when he knew someone needed help.

“Ended up kneeling down by the guy's chest. He had very shallow breaths so I was there to prepare for CPR if needed,” he says.

This man didn’t want to be identified, but he used to be an EMT and still has the skills and the training. He told an officer who he was and the officer gave him gloves to help.

For a moment, it was scary. The man says police and firefighters worked on the victim, and this man monitored the victim’s breathing.

“It was good seeing the life come back into him,” he says.

The man likely survived mainly due to the first responders' and his efforts.

“You know, it gives me chills,” he says.

But here's the reason why this man wanted to remain anonymous. He says he didn’t do it for the glory.

“The police are the ones who saved his life. They're the ones who got there, put the tourniquet on him. They're the true heroes and the firefighters.”

It's important to him that in times of need to look for the good, to look for those who are rushing in to do what they can. After all, it all comes down to helping people.

“That's what matters at the end of the day. It's helping people,” he says.

Police are still investigating this case.
