6-year-old's Lemonade 4 Lunch stand aims beyond Coeur d'Alene

Posted: Updated:
COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -

It all started with a simple glass of lemonade.

“If you want to pay, the money that you pay will go to the Coeur d’Alene School District to help pay off the reduced school lunch bill,” Amiah Van Hill told customers back in August.

A generous idea by a 6-year old.

“I just wanted to do the same thing except do a lemonade stand because I don't know what GoFundMe is,” Amiah said in August.

Inspired by Jeffrey Lew, a father in Seattle who started a GoFundMe to erase lunch debt for school districts in Washington, it was a no-brainer to keep going.

Fast-forward two months and as of Wednesday, Amiah raised over $23,000 from her lemonade stand, private donations, and a GoFundMe account.

“It means that there’s a lot of people out there that want to donate, there’s a lot of people who actually care about those kids so it’s kind of exciting,” Amiah said.

A modest second-grader at Hayden Meadows Elementary, she loves to be with her fellow classmates.

Amiah continues to be a beacon of hope.

After meeting her mark, she started a new goal.

“It's to do the whole state, just like what Jeffrey Lew is doing,” she said.

She wants to erase ALL school lunch debt in the state of Idaho.

Which is a gratifying feeling for her principal, Lisa Pica.

“To have someone like Amiah take it on herself and proceed with it and do such amazing things for our district, our community,” Pica said, “and now listening to her at the state of Idaho makes me incredibly proud as her principal."

On Thursday, Amiah and her family are going to present a check to the nutrition services side of the Coeur d’Alene School District for a total of, you guessed it, $23,000.
