SONOMA COUNTY, Calif -

Amazing stories of survival continue to come out of California where wildfires are burning out of control. While firefighters continue to work to contain the blazes, families are forced to flee, at times making agonizing decisions about what to leave behind.

Roland Hendel had to leave his family's Great Pyrenees dog, Odin, on their property. He says the dog was determined to stay with the family's goats and he had to let him do it, while the rest of the family escaped the Tubbs Fire in Sonoma County.

In a post on the online fundraising site YouCaring, Hendel explained what happened.

"Hours later when we had found relative safety we cried for Odin and our goats. I was sure I had sentenced them to a horrific and agonizing death," Hendel wrote. But when the family was able to return to their property days later, Hendel was greeted by his loyal pup, although Odin looked a little worse for wear, he and the family's goats were safe.

"Days later, when we were able to make it back to the property, we found a burned, battered, and weakened Odin, surrounded by his 8 goats, and several small deer who had come to him for protection and safety. Odin was weak, and limping, his once thick and beautiful coat singed orange, his whiskers melted. Even now as i write this, I am crying tears of gratitude and awe at his bravery and devotion."

If you'd like to donate to help Odin and the Hendel family, you can do so here.
