FRUITLAND, Idaho -

The Payette County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a Fruitland man made a grim discovery last week. He said he found three white kitchen garbage bags on Bureau of Land Management land outside Fruitland. Inside, Mike Rohrer said he found three dead husky puppies, each about 4 months old.

He had gone to the area on October 18 to do some shooting and posted photos on his Facebook page. He then reported it to the sheriff's office. One post about the bags has almost 2,000 shares.  Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Andy Creech says they have an ongoing investigation.

“We’ve got a lot good leads from citizens,” Creech told the Idaho Statesman. “We mainly want to talk to the person and find out how the dogs died, why they left them out there and see if there was a crime committed.”

As it stands, the charge would be littering on public land. The dogs didn't show signs of trauma, but Creech says how they died will factor into the case. In Idaho, animal cruelty can carry a fine of up to $5,000.

“If it turns out this is an animal cruelty case, then that’s a crime, we’ll deal with that,” Creech said. But he says this isn't the proper way to dispose of animals.

Meanwhile Roher says he hopes getting the word out about what he found will raise awareness about how to properly care for animals.

If you have information about the incident, contact the Payette County Sheriff’s Office at 208-642-6006 or the Crime Stoppers hotline at 208-414-2677.
