Spokane woman faces medical nightmare while on vacation

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

A Spokane woman is facing a medical billing nightmare.

Brandi Gallagher went to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for vacation last weekend, but on Sunday night, she fell and punctured her lung on a spike. She was sent to a St. Luke’s Hospital in Cabo San Lucas, but then, her mother, Debi, says they kept calling and raising the price of her bill. Debi says they wouldn’t let her leave until the $55,000 bill was paid.

The U.S. Consulate in Mexico actually issued a warning last year about four different hospitals. St. Luke’s is one of them. The notice says Mexican federal authorities ordered these hospitals to “suspend operations and to cease admitting new patients, following repeated reports of predatory business practices and billing.”

Debi is now in Mexico trying to sort all this out. “It's been torture. It’s been horrific. You hear about these stories all the time and you don't think it's going to happen to you,” she says. “I think I’m still in shock. It's unbelievable right now.”

Thankfully, Debi tells KHQ Brandi has been moved to a new hospital that she says has a good reputation. But they were only able to get her out after they paid $26,000.

Debi does want to thank the residents in Cabo San Lucas who heard about what was happening and helped get her daughter out.

This is a list of approved medical facilities. The US Consulate says travelers should refrain from using any facility that is not on this list:  https://mx.usembassy.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2016/10/BajaHospitals.pdf
