Spokesman: US family missing in Brazil is found

Posted: Updated:
LOS ANGELES -

A spokesman for the family of two Americans and their young daughters who went missing in Brazil after pirates attacked their boat says they've been found alive.

Colby Guillory of Los Angeles says the U.S. Embassy in Brazil told family members of Adam and Emily Harteau on Wednesday that a fisherman found the California couple and their 3- and 7-year-old daughters after they were in the jungle a few days.

Law enforcement officials in Brazil's northern jungle state of Para reported shortly afterward that the family was safe. Spokesman Sergio Chene said that except for insect bites and scratches, the Harteaus were in good condition and would spend the night in a hospital.

Officials say the family had been missing since Sunday, when pirates assaulted their boat in the Amazon River delta area. There was no immediate information on how the family escaped.
