Drivers change tires for winter

Snow brings snow tire rush Snow brings snow tire rush
SPOKANE, Wash. -

It's that time of the year when we prepare our cars for winter swapping out the summer tires for the noisy winter ones "Most of the tires that are going on now with studs," said Tire Rama manager Ken Smithers

Winter tires like these have metal studs embedded within the tread. These small, durable pieces of metal are designed to dig into the ice, which provides added traction, but you'd be surprised that most drivers now are looking for better alternatives “A lot of people are going to stud-less tires now, so they don't have that issue.”

Studded tires are always the topic of conversation especially when it comes Washington's roads. The most visible studded tire damage is the rutting seen on interstates with higher speeds and traffic volumes. According to the state of Washington studded tires cause between 20 to 29 million dollars worth of damage each year.

Tire technology over the last twenty years has also improved making the stud-less option I more popular, “stud-less tires works really well with light snow lots of ice lot of biting edges, so you have a micro bit technology, so it actually get's stickier as it get's colder, "Smithers added.
